SYSTEM OF TYPICAL GROTTO AND CAVES ON HALONG BAY
Halong Bay is famous by various beautiful caves and grottoes which were mostly created in Pleistocene epoch in around 2.000.000 – 11.000 years ago. Grotto system is wealthy treasure of Halong Bay as its aesthetic value and geological value.
Those are the typical ones of Halong bay that attract all of tourist coming there.
Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) is situated in the center of Halong Bay’s heritage zone. It lies on Bo Hon Island group, surrounded by the Bo Nau Cave, Me Cung Cave, Luon Cave and Ti Top Island. The cave was found by the French in 1901 and called as Grotte des surprises (Cave of the surprise).
Dau Go Cave (Wooden Stakes Cave) was found on the same name island, about 6 kilometers from Bai Chay wharf, Halong. This is the biggest and also the most beautiful grotto on Halong Bay.
Thien Cung Grotto (Heavenly Cave) is situated on Dau Go Island (Wooden Stakes Island) in the southwestern Halong Bay and about 4 kilometers from tourism wharf. Thien Cung Grotto is at the height of 25 meters above the sea level.
Bo Nau Cave (Pelican Cave) is located on the southwestern Halong Bay. It’s about 13 kilometers far from Bai Chay Tourist Wharf and 2-3 kilometers to the southeast of Trong Mai Islet.
Trinh Nu Grotto (Virgin Grotto) is situated on Bo Hon Island, the same location with Luon Cave and Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave). It’s about 15 kilometers from Bai Chay Tourist Wharf to the south.
Me Cung Cave (Bewitching Grotto) is situated on Lom Bo Island, about 2 kilometers far from Ti Top Island to the southwest. The mouth of Me Cung Cave is on the height of 25 meters above the sea level.
Ho Dong Tien (Fairy Lake Cave) is one of the most beautiful caves on Halong Bay. It’s featured with not only charming beauty but also geological value and historical value.
Luon Cave is located in the northeast of Bo Hon Island. It’s about 14 kilometers to the south from Bai Chay Beach. Near the cave are Con Rua Islet (Turtle Islet) and Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave).
Hanh Cave is located at the foot of Quang Hanh Lime-stone Mountain, about 20 kilometers far from Bai Chay Tourist Wharf. Hanh Cave is not only the most beautiful but also the longest cave in Halong.
Tam Cung Grotto Located in the center of Halong Bay, 5 kilometers from the Sung Sot Cave to the northeast, Tam Cung Grotto (Three Palaces Cave) is one of the most wonderful caves in Halong. Tam Cung Grotto is situated on the May Den Island – an island which is almost separate from the other islands. On the May Den Island, there are many precarious cliffs and lush forests.
Kim Quy Grotto (Golden Tortoise Grotto) was formed in Dam Nam Islet, near Soi Sim Islet. It’s about 12 kilometers far from Bai Chay Tourist Wharf.
